Support improvement to our Nation's Dam & Locks

Our nation’s aging lock and dam infrastructure plays a crucial role in both commerce and recreation, yet it has been neglected for far too long. Originally built in the 1930s, 80% of these structures have surpassed their intended lifespan, threatening the efficiency and safety of barge transportation—one of the most fuel-efficient, cost-effective, and low-carbon methods of moving goods. Beyond their critical role in our supply chain, these waterways also fuel tourism and recreation, generating economic benefits for communities nationwide. Without proper investment, the deterioration of this infrastructure could have devastating consequences, disrupting both industry and the local economies that rely on vibrant river activity.

To keep these vital waterways operational, we need continued funding through the Energy and Water Development (EWD) appropriations. The Inland Waterways Trust Fund—supported by towboat operators' diesel fuel taxes—depends on these federal dollars to maintain and improve lock and dam structures. Additionally, the Corps of Engineers' Operation and Maintenance budget must increase annually to keep pace with inflation and ensure these waterways remain safe and functional. Now is the time to act. Send an email to Congress today and advocate for the funding necessary to sustain our river infrastructure—an investment that returns $12 for every $1 spent.
